The UPnP Forum Universal Plug & Play (UPnP™)
Universal Plug & Play (UPnP™) is an open standard, designed to enable universal plug and play capability between devices and controllers from different vendors over the IP networks.
UPnP™ is similar in concept to the USB Plug & Play standard for PCs that enables us to simply plug devices into the computer, allowing us to immediately work with cameras, memory sticks, etc. However, while USB Plug & Play is designed for a PC bus and therefore limited in distance to approximately 25m or 75ft, UPnP™ uses TCP/IP and extends to the entire network. This means that UPnP™ devices can be controlled anywhere in the building or in remote sites over LAN or WAN.
UPnP™ is already included as standard in the latest product lines of security industry leaders such as Pelco and Axis, and is fast being adopted as the open standard communication protocol of choice. The UPnP™ steering committee includes industry giants such as Intel, HP Microsoft, Siemens, Philips and Echelon (LonMark), ensuring rapid adoption of the standard. RISCO Group is a member of the UPnP™ non-profit organization. For more information on UPnP™ please visit:
